Community @ccess to Computers

Lara Secondary College is making its computing facilities available to the wider local community through the following programs:

Homework Help
Offered to students of all ages in our community who do not have computers or Internet access at home or for students who prefer to use school computer facilities to complete homework tasks. Primary, secondary and other students welcome.
Internet Access
Age appropriate access will be provided for people requiring it, Bookings available for 1 hour blocks.
Computers for Fun
An opportunity to use some of the fun programs that are available on the Lara Secondary College network during after school hours.

Please note this program is an offer to use school facilities on a weekly basis and is not a teaching program. However, support will be provided by the attending teacher and technician.

3:30pm - 5:00pm
Enrolments
22 places available. Places will be allotted on a weekly basis, but participants can book ahead.
Cost
No charge for this program this term.
Requirements
All participants will be required to sign an Acceptable Use Policy agreeing to use the Lara Secondary College computer facilities safely and appropriately.

Geelong Regional Library

Lara doesn't have a library yet but is part of the Geelong Regional Library to which membership is free. The nearest library branch is Corio Branch (John Drysdale Library), open Monday - Saturday, Cox Rd, Norlane, (03) 5275 2388.

In lieu of a local library building, a mobile library makes regular visits to Lara Centreway shopping centre and St Anthony's Primary School. Call (03) 5241 6151 for mobile library times. The mobile library schedule for Lara is:

  • Thursday 2pm - 6pm (Centreway, Waverley Road)
  • Saturday 9:30am - 11:30am (Centreway, Waverley Road)

You can browse the full catalogue of items online and reserve books to be delivered to the mobile library for collection. So apart from browsing the shelves, you don't miss out too much. The mobile library seems to carry a reasonable stock of different items too, and loans periods are longer than normal branch loans, with 4 weeks for books/audio and 2 weeks for magazines.

The Lara Fire Brigade is located on Mill Road. Lara's Fire Brigade consists of approximately 45 volunteers who provide fire services and fire safety information to the local community.

* All people planning to burn-off, need to have a permit to burn. This applies all year-round in the City of Greater Geelong, regardless of your property size or weather conditions. Vocational Training

St Laurence run a vocational training program designed to give its participants the chance to gain knowledge and experience in different career choices. It provides a learning environment in which transferable skills are learnt, which apply to all career types. Youth Referral and Independent Person Program

The Youth Referral and Independent Person Program (YRIPP) provides volunteers to assist young people at Police Stations. An Independent Person supports young people though police interviews and refers them to support services to prevent future offending.

YRIPP is funded by the State Government and is an award winning crime prevention program. It is a partnership of the Centre for Multicultural Youth Issues, the Youth Affairs Council of Victoria, UnitingCare Ballarat and other agencies.
